History of the National Organization
Alpha Sigma Alpha was founded at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia on November 15, 1901, by five friends who had all been extended invitations to five different existing sororities. They knew they did not want to accept the separate invitations and not be sisters, and decided to form a sorority of their own.
These five women were:
Calva Watson Wootton, Juliette Hundley Gilliam, Louise Cox Carper, Mary Williamson Hundley, Virgina Boyd Noell

History of the Local Organization
The Beta Theta Chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha was established at Central Michigan University on November 15, 1941. Beta Theta Chapter started out at the Rachel Tate Literacy Society because sororities and fraternities had been outlawed from 1915 to 1939. In May of 1940, the Rachel Tate Literacy Society became the local sororiety Sigma Pi Delta. On June 15, 1941 we became a colony of Alpha Sigma Alpha, and installed on November 15 of that same year.
